McCaffrey’s Food Market’s Holiday Parade

The parade kicks off at 2PM from The Stocking Works on South State Street, travels north to Washington Avenue and makes a left. Then continues east one block to Sycamore Street and then make another right turn. The Parade will then continue north on Sycamore Street and ends at Durham Road.  Last year over 50 groups participated, over 1800 people participated and several thousand lined the streets to watch.  We are very excited about the McCaffrey’s Food Market's Newtown Holiday Parade.  We strongly encourage all participants to be creative in showcasing a festive holiday theme for their group.

Parade Award Categories to be judged:  Best Theme, Best Decorated, Most Creative, Best Small Group, Best Musical Group, Best Overall.

Four Mummer Bands will participate!

The Greater Kensington String Band - Sponsored by The Birches
The Greater Kensington String Band was organized in 1946 and first marched in the famous New Year's Day Mummers Parade in 1948. January 1, 2006 marked the band's fifty-ninth consecutive appearance in the spectacular Philadelphia Parade. Since its inception, the band has achieved a 6.4 average prize. The band, known as "GKSB", has taken first prize on two occasions, 1979 and 1988, and has finished in the top ten an impressive forty one times including seventeen years in the prestigious top five.

The Uptown String Band - Sponsored by the Sycamore Street Association
The Uptown String Band is a non-profit organization based in Hulmeville, PA. They are a member of the Philadelphia Mummers String Band Association, and participate annually in the Philadelphia Mummers Parade, held each year on New Year’s Day. This award-winning band performs locally, nationally, and internationally throughout the year to fund its New Year’s Day production, and takes pride in entertaining the public with “Philadelphia String Band Music At Its Finest.”  The Uptown String Band has been parading in the annual Philadelphia New Years Day Mummers Parade since 1938. The band has taken top honors in the parade in 1957, 1976, and 1977.

The Quaker City String Band -  Sponsored by Rittenhouse Home
The Quaker City String Band has been entertaining audiences with the unique sights and sounds of Philadelphia Mummery for over 50 years.Quaker City String Band is a perennial favorite among thousands of spectators on New Years Day at the Philadelphia Mummer’s Parade. Whether fans are braving the frigid temperatures on the parade route or enjoying our performance from the comfort of their home, the Quaker City String Band has consistently been a “fan favorite.”The members of Quaker City have used their creativity and innovative style to consistently be a top prize winner in the yearly String Band competition. The challenge of creating a different theme every year with new music, costumes and choreography is one that the Quaker City String Band gladly accepts, striving to out-do themselves annually.The Quaker City String Band takes its unique form of entertainment to audiences throughout the Philadelphia area and in Cuba, Mexico, England, Canada, France, Ireland and Italy.

A hand picked panel will be reviewing every participant in the parade and deciding on the best based on their presentation, creativity and theme.  We will be announcing the recognition for these categories shortly after the parade and will be posting this information on the Newtown Business Associations website and through local media.

Recognition will be in the following categories:  Best Theme, Best Decorated, Most Creative, Best Non Profit(small group), Best Musical Group, and Best Overall.
